California Star
|
The California Star is the third collaboration between Don Varner and Ron
Covell. 5,000 man hours spanning almost three years went into the creation
of this ground up custom. The California Star began traditionally enough,
based on a `27 Model T ragtop (the resemblance is muted at best.) Other
influences in the California Star's design were track roadsters and Indy
championship cars, but the end result is an original, unique show car.
The California Star was completed with painstaking detail in the body, frame,
drivetrain and interior. While the Star appears to be simple in its
execution, that simplicity was achieved through concentrated effort and
forethought. As Don Varner points out, when the competition boils down to two
cars, the judges start picking nits until they find a flaw. Attention to
detail becomes excruciatingly important. Don should know, for the
California Star was the "World's Most Beautiful Roadster" for 1984! This is
the TOP award given in American Hot Rodding!
